Smoke alarms are an important part of our strategy for keeping us safe if there should be a house fire. It’s important to check and change batteries regularly – I have a friend who puts in new batteries every New Year’s Day. It’s an easy date to remember and it’s often one that people spend at home without a huge amount to do, so it’s ideal for a little chore like this. Might be worth being careful on any chairs or ladders if you have a hangover though.
Regularly testing your smoke alarm is a must and something that can often get neglected as day-to-day family life takes over. It’s worth making it a part of your routine and checking on a set day each month. Maybe the first of each month would work for you or perhaps pay day would be easier to remember.
Now I knew about the importance of checking batteries, but I hadn’t realised that you should replace your smoke alarm regularly too. It makes perfect sense though and they aren’t expensive items to replace, but in any case it’s difficult to put a price on safety. We’ve teamed up with FireAngel to work with them on their ‘Check the Date’ campaign, which aims to raise awareness with homeowners and parents to ensure they’re replacing their smoke every ten years. If your alarms are older (and I think hand on heart at least one or two of our three are), you need to be looking at replacing them as they can become ineffective.

Such an important device to have in the home
Every home should have a smoke alarm
It’s always a good thing to have a spare in case one breaks especially if they are old ones like mine!
So important . One of the best gadgets ever invented.
Regularly testing your smoke alarm is a must.
So vital!
I will love this
This would go in my bottom drawer ready for when I move out. Hadn’t even thought about getting one!
we check our alarms quite often – just in case!
My smoke alarm went off recently when my woodburner had got so hot it had made the log pile near it smoulder. I had only left the room for 10 minutes and the alarm went off that was how sensitive it was. I want to put one in each room now.
I need to go and check our, I will make sure I haven’t had a drink
Just bought a new one for my hallway, as when I did the monthy check it didn’t beep, that’s with a change of batteries as well. Time for another new one in my kitchen now! You can never take fire safety too seriously!

THIS IS A GREAT LITTLE PRACTICAL PRIZE
id love this for the hallway upstairs
What a super prize and a very important one too!
Fire alarms are great – we have had two fire angel alarms fitted FREE by the fire brigade as was advertised to make homes safer. The alarms state they last for years, they don’t . Luckily the fire brigade did replace them for free once upon a time and they did replace the two they fitted originally. However again both have become faulty, left them outside for a while to stop them beeping and returned inside. After about a week they would start to beep again. Now put the upstairs one downstairs which for now seems to be Ok, but the other one has gone past the beeping stage and just crackles constantly. Did contact the fire brigade again but they stated they did not replace them anymore and also have found out that a lot of fire angel alarms are faulty on the internet. Did call the people who supply these alarms, but they have a system where you need to post the alarms to them at your cost, wait for assessment etc and it might be replaced by another, but if they like the ones we had and have, then it could become expensive having to keep sending them back as they certainly do not last the 10 or more years
Thanks for the great prize and competition. Good luck everyone!
love to win this item for the kitchen
Wow, would love to win this! 🙂 Thanks for the great giveaway!
What a wonderful giveaway, we could do with more smoke alarms as there is only one working one in our house.
I had no idea that smoke detectors needed changing every 10 years. The ones in our old house were definitely over 10 years old as we lived there 13 years and never changed them. I’ve no idea how old the smoke alarms are in our current house, so we should probably change them to be on the safe side.
I also gave you a +K for Children on Klout, got confused in the Gleam widget!
Important to have these in homes and to renew them every so often.
