I visited the Mount Rooms in Barry for a two night stay. The Mount Rooms have a great location close to Barry’s High Street. They are convenient for the railway station too. Barry is set on a very steep hill and the Mount Rooms are partway up this hill. The hotel does have a small amount of onsite parking, but not enough for all the guests. It is easy to park on the nearby roads and it is free to do so.
Just around the corner from the Mount Rooms, you’ll find Stacey’s house (from Gavin and Stacey) – just take a look at Google maps to find it and the house is very easy to identify once you reach the road. Whilst the Mount Rooms are well situated for Barry, it’s a fairly long walk (maybe 15-20 minutes) to Barry Island. There is car parking near Barry Island, so that may be an option too.
The communal areas of the hotel are well appointed and whilst we didn’t use the restaurant or the bar, they looked clean and well kept. When we arrived at reception we were greeted promptly and pleasantly. All went well with the check in. We weren’t asked about our mobility though, which perhaps we should have been given the room we were allocated. To be fair the receptionist did take us part of the way to our room and pointed out to us where it was. We could have said something about the steep slope at that point if we had been concerned.
Our room was at the rear of the building at the top of a steep slope near the gym. There were a few rooms in a free standing building there. It was reasonably well lit at night, so the slope and steps were fine for anyone with decent mobility. If mobility is a concern at all, I would mention it to the hotel before you arrive and get allocated a different room if you need to.
As you can see from the pictures, the room is a very generous size. It did feel a bit odd not to have larger furniture in it. All the furniture was fairly small and the bed was only a double, but it could easily accommodate a king-size or even a super king. It would have been a nice touch to have a sitting area too as there was certainly the space for it. Everything seemed new and fresh, which was very pleasant. The main issue for us was the lack of sound proofing between our room and the room(s) above. Trying to get a lie in, whilst two people in the room above seem to be intent on getting their 10,000 steps a day in, doesn’t work well.

Our room was reasonably well equipped with all the things you find in most hotel rooms. The only thing that seemed a bit odd was the very small quantity of toilet paper provided. It was towards the end of a roll and no spare in the room. Luckily, we noticed that before needing it, so we were weren’t caught short and being provided with more wasn’t an issue.
Overall, the Mount Rooms is a decent place to stay in Barry and I’d book again if we were revisiting the area.
If you are looking for places to eat and drink nearby, we went to a few places. We had breakfast at the Wetherspoons (The Sir Samuel Romilly); for drinking we liked The Park (corner of Bell Street and Park Crescent) best; and for a bit of a splash out dinner try The Shed. All of these are within about 10 minutes walk of the Mount Rooms.

Looks amazing x
I absolutely love Gavin and Stacey and would love to visit Barry! I’ll have to check this place out thanks for the advice!
I would stay here.
